The Value of Our Coaching Community
There are three clear reasons why professional coaches worldwide choose to join the ICF. According to Steve Weiss, VP of Professional Coaches, people join the ICF for the strength and reputation of the credential, access to real-time learning, and an opportunity to build a professional network.
But what about local chapters like ours?
Similarly, coaches join our chapter to align with the industry's gold standard. Yes, they want access to learning they can apply to improve their coaching. Beyond a professional network, we offer something else: a sense of local community and belonging.
Back in late 2016, after my coach training program, I was searching for a professional home. I was craving connection and community. I wanted to interact with others in the field, learn from their experiences, and continue growing my skills.
I found a home with the Iowa Chapter of ICF. They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like I belonged. I made friends, found mentors, learned new tools and techniques, and advanced my career. I expanded into different coaching specialties and learned best practices from coaches across industries. What a wonderful ride it has been.
This is why I give back to this community, the one that helped shape my professional identity and gave me the confidence and resources to pursue my dream of becoming a coach.
You, our members, and volunteer leaders make this chapter special and unique. We offer each other support, encouragement, advice, and friendship. Even in today’s world of disruption and distraction, we have each other to lean on.
One of my favorite memories is sitting around a table at one of our networking events when a member facing a challenge shared it with the group. With their permission, the group of coaches did what they do best. They helped. They listened. They asked great questions. They had each other's backs.
The value of our chapter lies in our community and the strong relationships we share. I’m so proud of all of you and the positive impact you have on one another and the world.
